LKW Design’s Top Tips For Designing a Beautiful Bedroom
Though the process of making decisions for changes within the home can be daunting, even for seasoned veterans, there’s still method to our (and soon-to-be your) madness. It certainly will take some time to come up with a plan of action for how you’re going to attack your next design project, and the same goes for us! Sometimes trial and error is our first starting point for making design decisions. Over the years, we have developed a 5-point checklist to guide ourselves in designing beautiful rooms and we’d like to share those tips with you to help you get started on your next home project!
The first step in designing a beautiful bedroom is to have a clear direction and design concept in mind. Take the time to create a digital photo collage (#Pinterest) or print images of items for your space and pin them up on a pin board – old-school style. This allows you to edit and really think through how all of the elements will work together. If you can’t purchase everything at once, have a goal to purchase the most important pieces during the next year.
Once your start deconstructing a room based on your concepts, I’m sure you’ll quickly realize the importance of storage and keeping everything in its place, however; be deliberate and realistic about these storage needs. Think about the storage you need – do items need to be hidden or are they display-worthy? Pieces with drawers are more expensive, but worth it so that everything has a place and your space feels tidy. And remember, the case goods should not match. Please, please do not buy a suite of anything from a furniture store. They should compliment each other, but each should bring it’s own personality to the room that works with your overall concept. If you have limited space, and the king bed you really want requires smaller nightstands, consider wall sconces instead of table lamps. As with matching suites of bedroom furniture, matching bedding is not on-trend and hasn’t been for a ong while. Buy soft, washable, high quality bedding basics in neutral colors and have fun with a few decorative pillows. Don’t overlook a decorative fabric box spring cover to finish the bedding ensemble if you can avoid a bedskirt, which we recommend!
Speaking of table lamps, do not skimp on the lighting! Lighting is one of the most important elements in creating a relaxing, and welcoming space after the sun sets. Think of your lighting as art. Put your overhead lighting on a rheostat, and try to find lamps that are compatible for 3-way bulbs so you can control the level of light beyond “on and off”. The lamp height should be short enough so that you can’t see the bulb when you are reading in bed to avoid glare.
I know what you’re thinking – this process is already overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. Don’t start from scratch if you don’t have to! A basic piece, such as an upholstered bed, can look totally different mixed with new bedding. Take photos of the existing pieces that you want to use in your new room and incorporate them into your concept board. Play with how those pieces work with different styles. If it doesn’t work, and you don’t love it, do not build your concept around it. Be open minded to the design process, but edit ruthlessly.
