While it certainly doesn’t feel like it here in the Vail Valley, we are getting ready to ring in summer as Memorial Day is just around the corner. And what better way to kick off the season of sun with a weekend camping in beautiful Colorado? Let’s not forgot why we have this privilege – thanks to the men and women who serve our country and provide the opportunities and freedoms for us to celebrate as we choose – so remember to honor those who serve (and have served) while you are enjoying warm (hopefully) weather, roaring campfires, and great company!
Some of you may be dreading the annual Memorial Day camping trips – it’s a lot of work to pack everything (without forgetting the sleeping bags and the marshmallows) and then set it up in a way that makes sense and is functional for your campsite. Never fear – LKW is here! We are going give you a step-by-step guide to help you set up the perfect compound this Memorial Day (haters gonna hate).
Step 1: First impressions start at the door step. It’s important to create a welcoming threshold into your sleeping tent. Create this cozy porch look by laying down a rugged throw or mat allowing you a place to keep your shoes – muddy from the afternoon’s hike. Want to recreate your typical hibernation den? Get some comfortable cots and use a cooler as a nightstand!
Step 2: The key to good eats is in a well-organized camp kitchen. Set-up the prep and eating areas with storage below some foldout tables. This will keep everything you brought along closed up and secure, but easy to access. If you have small, soft-sided coolers, you can organize your pantry in a way that makes sense. Color coding anyone?!
Step 3: Set up a comfy hang-out space. No camping trip is complete without a common area for you and your friends to gather ‘round the coffee table with good drinks and a game of cards. This space can be used day or night, rain or shine, and is sure to make any camp trip a memorable one. By adding the right accessories (think hanging pendant lights), you’ll never wanna leave!
Step 4: Come prepared for weather. We have all been there before. We have prepped and packed for an epic weekend of camping, expecting sunshine and lots of outdoor adventures, only to get to our site and have the skies open up in a downpour for the entire weekend. Make sure you don’t get left out in the rain this year and be sure to pack a rain/shade tent to keep fun on the radar! Pop-up tents work great and you can even secure tarps along the sides to prevent sideways rain! Spacious enough to house your “kitchen” and “living areas”, these covers will be sure to save the day in the event of unfavorable weather.
Step 5: Stand back and admire your work! Be sure to snap some photos and share them with us!
